📣 Homeroom Headlines
Washington State’s Educational Talent Search (ETS), a federal grant program, is bridging the gap between high school and the world beyond by offering comprehensive college and career readiness support to students in grades 6-12.
Funded by the Department of Education and free for participants, the program dispatches advisors to various schools who guide students through:
College applications
Offer application fee waivers
Assist with scholarship applications
Help with the FAFSA
Most U.S. states have their own versions of programs like this, which you can find by searching: [your state] educational talent search program.
What this means for students: In a world where the journey post-high school can be daunting, ETS is a beacon of support.
Not only do these programs provide structured paths toward higher education and career opportunities, but it also offers a holistic approach, emphasizing personal growth and mental well-being.
Consider checking your state’s ETS resources to see how they can help serve you in your post-high-school journey.
Learn4Life is a network of over 85 alternative public high schools, using Student Retention Specialists to actively keep at-risk students from dropping out.
These retention specialists can quickly identify at-risk students under Learn4Life's umbrella, and work with them to improve educational outcomes. Some of their interventions include:
Home visits and childcare
Personalized learning plans
Flexible schedules
Tech resources
Tutoring
We wanted to highlight their efforts in October – Dropout Prevention Month – because it’s about this time in the school year when struggling students are at the greatest risk of dropping out.
If you or someone you know could benefit from a service like this, you can click here to learn more about Learn4Life.
What this means for students: The 20% dropout rate among high school students is no joke. But Learn4Life proves that early intervention, combined with a compassionate, flexible, and individualized approach, can change the trajectory for many students.
Learn4Life’s schools are championing innovative methods that not only cater to academic needs but also address personal struggles, ensuring students get the comprehensive support they deserve. 👏
The demand for culinary talents is surging, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting that 23% of new job opportunities by 2031 will belong to the leisure and hospitality sector.
To answer this growing need, Ontario High School's Culinary Arts Program in SoCal is turning up the heat. This program equips students with foundational culinary skills, transforming their passions into promising career pathways.
With a state-of-the-art kitchen inaugurated in 2019, the school not only teaches culinary arts but also provides opportunities for students to cater events and earn their food handler's certificates.
What this means for students: This Culinary Arts Program is a perfect example of the evolving landscape of education. No longer limited to traditional college routes, students now have enriched avenues to turn their passions into professions.
Tailored programs like this provide viable and promising alternatives, and showcase that fulfilling, prosperous careers can be built by pursuing aspirations — even if it’s off the beaten path.
😌 The Wellness Workshop

Feeling the stress of that upcoming test or group project deadline? 😓
You're not alone. A majority of high school students deal with stress as a daily hurdle.
But here's the cool thing – we found some science-backed tools that might just help you keep those stress levels in check.
Claire Sorlie, a Certified Nutritionist, has 3 simple but effective stress-busters you can try this week to lower your stress levels:
Having caffeine after breakfast can help stop your cortisol levels (aka your stress-hormone levels) from spiking
A magnesium deficiency can lead to excess stress in the body, so consider snacking on magnesium-rich foods like avocados, hemp seeds, or coconut milk. 😋
Sing loud and proud! This helps stimulate your vagus nerve, which can help your body switch from a stressed state to a relaxed state.
Sometimes, taking care of yourself in small ways can make a big difference.
Let us know if you try any of these tips this week and how they go for you!
