📣 Homeroom Headlines

High school students in North Carolina participated in the Duke University Neuroscience Experience (DUNE) program where they conducted hands-on neuroscience research projects under the guidance of Duke faculty.

DUNE aims to combat some of the starkest academic inequalities by bringing students from underrepresented backgrounds into the STEM pipeline.

What this means for students: In an academic landscape where representation is skewed, and BIPOC individuals often find themselves underrepresented, DUNE is pushing back, paving the way for a more diverse STEM pipeline.

DUNE is a testament to the evolving world of academia that is slowly but surely recognizing the immense value of diverse minds.

The DUNE initiative isn't just another science program—it’s part of a progressive movement reshaping the future of STEM. And we love to see it 👏

As climate change threatens our future, New Jersey became the first state to mandate climate change education across all grade levels and subjects in K-12 public schools.

Despite some resistance, state-mandated standards act as a shield against climate education denial, and the majority of parents back this initiative, as indicated by polls.

What this means for students: New Jersey’s comprehensive climate education approach is setting students on a path of climate literacy, blending knowledge with empowerment.

This isn't just a lesson plan; it's a call to action, pushing students to be proactive and reduce climate-related anxieties. As New Jersey sets the bar, other states are taking notice, aspiring to replicate their successful model.

With the retiring workforce leaving a significant skilled trades gap, Southern Nevada Trades High School emerges as a beacon for students seeking an alternative education.

Focusing on construction trades and bolstered by significant local support, the school's small-class philosophy promises hands-on skills for high-paying, in-demand jobs.

What this means for students: This new trades high school offers students a unique opportunity to venture into sought-after trades careers. Plus, as the current wave of trade business owners retire, there’s a ton of potential for students to start their own lucrative trade businesses to fill the gap.

With a smaller, specialized setting, students are empowered with both academic and trade knowledge. Beyond being a rewarding, alternative career path, this is a great display of a school challenging the conventional educational narrative. 🛠️

😌 The Wellness Workshop

It's not just a buzzword. Getting enough sleep is pivotal for teenage health and well-being.

New science says that in addition to needing more sleep, most teens’ biological clocks naturally prefer to wake up 3 hours later than adults!

No wonder that first-period class can feel like such a struggle. 😴

Enter the University of Washington. They developed a guide for teens with 13 sleep tips that actually help.

It’s a free resource, backed by scientific studies, and tailored specifically for teenagers, covering tips like:

  • How much sleep you really need

  • Counter-intuitive advice on what NOT to do to fall asleep

  • How to set up the perfect sleep environment

With the school year in full swing, mastering sleep can make a huge difference.
